To Officials, Citizens and Organizations in Southeastern Massachusetts concerned with Sustainability
Two months ago Jean MacCormack, Chancellor of UMass Dartmouth, and I invited you to the first meeting of the Southeastern Massachusetts Council on Sustainability held on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at the ATMC in Fall River. A goal of the Council is to coordinate efforts among different entities in the region. The Council is an opportunity to stretch limited resources as these entities share knowledge, adopt best practices and form partnerships to address issues at larger geographic and functional levels.
More than 80 people attended the kickoff meeting. They represented education, business, agriculture, environmental groups, foundations and local governments. Susan Jennings from UMass Dartmouth’s Office of Campus and Community Sustainability and Anthony Garro, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs welcomed the group. Professor David Chapman and his students described the class project used to develop a logo for the Council. I presented an overview of sustainability in southeastern Massachusetts.
Each of the 5 working groups (food and agriculture, economic development, energy, natural resources, and transportation) had two conveners to organize the first working group meetings.
